What is rope access insurance?

Rope access insurance is a specialist form of business insurance for IRATA technicians and other rope access professionals. The insurance is typically built around no height limit public liability cover and supported by other covers designed for the risks faced by abseiling and rope access contractors

At Suited, we offer specialist rope access insurance for technicians and contractors who work at height, including professionals working in suspension where standard trades insurance may not provide the right fit.

In our experience, one of the main challenges for rope access contractors is finding public liability insurance without restrictive height limits.

The public liability cover available through Suited does not apply a specific height limit for eligible rope access activities, which can make it a more suitable option for IRATA trained or similarly qualified professionals, subject to the policy terms, insured activities and underwriting criteria.

Who is rope access insurance for?

Rope access insurance may be suitable for qualified technicians, contractors and businesses carrying out work at height using rope access methods. This can include façade work, building maintenance, inspection work, cleaning, repairs, signage, telecoms work and other access tasks where standard trade insurance may apply height limits or exclude work in suspension.

Where your work involves higher-risk activities, offshore work, structural work or specialist inspection services, you should check the policy terms carefully to make sure the cover matches the work you carry out.

How does it work?

At Suited, we arrange rope access insurance through one of the specialist ABI-approved insurers in the UK market with experience in the rope access sector. Our aim is to make it easier for rope access technicians and contractors to access suitable business insurance online, including public liability cover without a specific height limit for eligible rope access activities.

You can get a price online and choose the covers you need, with the option to pay through a flexible monthly subscription.

If you need to make a claim, this will be handled by the insurer in line with the policy terms. By working with a specialist insurer familiar with rope access risks, we aim to give customers access to claims support with relevant technical knowledge and experience.

What does public liability insurance for rope access and abseiling contractors cover?

Our public liability insurance for rope access focuses on broad, reliable protection for the tasks you actually perform.

Public liability insurance can help protect you if your rope access work leads to accidental injury to someone else or damage to third-party property. It sits alongside, rather than replaces, your duties under work at height and health and safety regulations.

You should still make sure your work is properly planned, supervised and carried out in line with relevant work at height requirements. We have worked with our insurers to make sure it covers claims related to injuries or property damage caused by your work.

Here are some examples of how it can protect you:

  • Falling equipment: While performing maintenance on a high-rise building, a tool slips from your harness and damages a parked car below. The insurance covers the repair costs.
  • Injured pedestrians: A passerby trips over your safety equipment on the ground level and sustains an injury. The policy covers their medical expenses and any compensation.
  • Property damage: While conducting facade repairs, a piece of exterior cladding comes loose and damages a nearby structure. The repair costs are covered under your policy.

What rope access activities can be covered?

We can consider a range of rope access and abseiling activities, including:

  • Pfaçade inspections;
  • external cleaning;
  • window & gutter cleaning;
  • signage installation and maintenance;
  • painting and decorating at height;
  • surveys and condition reports;
  • access work for inspections; and
  • other eligible rope access work carried out at height.

Some rope access activities may be subject to restrictions, referral or exclusion depending on the type of work or work site. Please check the policy documentation or contact us if you have questions.

Other insurance for abseiling contractors

While Public Liability is your "licence to work," we offer additional covers to provide enhanced protection for your business.

Professional indemnity insurance for rope access contractors

Rope access contractors often buy professional indemnity insurance alongside public liability cover, especially if they provide advice, surveys, inspections, reports, specifications, consultancy or project management.

Professional indemnity insurance can help protect your business if a client claims your professional work caused them a financial loss.

For example, a claim could arise if:

  • APan inspection report misses a defect;
  • a client relies on incorrect advice about access requirements;
  • an error in a survey or report leads to additional costs;
  • project management mistakes cause delay or disruption; or
  • a professional recommendation results in remedial work being needed.

Rope access employers’ liability insurance

If you hire other technicians or use labour-only sub-contractors, employers’ liability insurance is a legal necessity in the UK. It protects you if a team member is injured or becomes ill due to their work—such as an injury sustained during rigging or while in suspension.

Business Equipment & Specialist Gear

Your ropes, harnesses, and descent devices are your lifeline. Our Business equipment insurance ensures you can quickly replace or repair kit that is stolen, damaged, or lost. We understand that without your gear, you can’t work, so we focus on minimising your downtime.

Own and hired-in plant

If your contract requires the use of cherry pickers, winches, or portable cranes, we can offer  hired-in plant insurance for both owned and rented machinery. This protects you against the high costs of theft or accidental damage while the plant is in your care, custody, and control.

Common questions

Does standard public liability insurance cover rope access work?

In our professional experience, the answer is almost always no. Most public liability covers will usually include a low height limit (often 10m or 20m max) and specifically exclude "work in suspension." We heard from a few contractors who unknowingly worked uninsured because their policy didn't account for abseiling. We offer cover that is designed to work for most rope access technicians.

Is there a height limit on Suited rope access insurance?

We do not impose arbitrary height limits for the majority of maintenance, inspection, and cleaning tasks. We believe that if you are a certified technician following WAHR and LOLER regulations, you are qualified to work at any height. While we provide "no height limit" cover as standard for most trades, we always advise you to check your specific Policy Summary, as certain activities like major structural erection may have different terms.

What insurance is legally required for a rope access company in the UK?

If you hire anyone—including labour-only sub-contractors—Employers’ Liability insurance is a legal requirement in the UK. While Public Liability isn't a legal requirement by law, we find it is a contractual necessity. In our experience, almost all UK site managers will require proof of at least £5m or £10m in Public Liability before they allow you to rig up on their project.

Are my ropes and harnesses covered if they are stolen from a site?

Standard liability insurance only covers damage to other people/property. To protect your kit, you must add Business Equipment cover. We offer specialist gear insurance that protects your essential lifeline—including ropes, harnesses, and NDT tools—against theft or accidental damage. We understand that in this industry, if you don't have your gear, you can’t work, so we focus on getting you back in suspension quickly.
